11 ways to use Baking Powder


Here are some tips on other uses of baking powder, besides baking:

  1. Baking powder makes an effective cleaner and deodorizer for your fridge. Sprinkle a little in a damp sponge and clean the inside of the appliance as you normally would.
  2. You want to keep ants away from your house? Well, mix up equal parts of baking powder and salt together. Then, sprinkle the mixture wherever you see them coming in from.
  3. To open up a partially clogged drain, pour a half cup of baking powder into it. Follow this with a cup of vinegar. Allow the solution to bubble for several minutes, the run hot water down the drain.
  4. Sprinkle baking powder on rugs and carpets before vacuuming as a deodorising treatment. Most carpet powders you buy are baking powder based.
  5. Fill a pair of old socks with baking powder. Tie a knot at the top of each sock. Then, place in a pair of shoes or slippers that you want to freshen up.
  6. Sprinkle a teaspoon of baking powder in the water when you soak dried beans before cooking. This will prevent the gas and bloating thy cause.
  7. Remove crayon marks from walls by scrubbing gently with an old toothbrush and a paste of baking powder and water.
  8. Is your mop stinky? Mops can get foul if stored while moist. Well, instead of throwing it out, soak it in a mixture of 4 tablespoons baking powder and a gallon of water fro a while.
  9. Dissolve a couple of tablespoons of baking soda in water in a microwave safe bowl, and then bring to the boil in your microwave. Allow to sit for a minute or two, then you should easily be able to wipe out any baked on stains.
  10. A pan with burnt food in it an be cleaned with less effort if you soak it in baking powder and hot water first.
  11. Mix some baking powder and enough water to make a paste. Use a sponge to spread the paste over the inside of your oven. Make sure that you don't touch the element if your stove is electric. Allow the paste to set undisturbed for several hours. Then, scrub the oven clean.
